Gifted Testing

What Is Gifted Testing And Who Is It For?

Our gifted testing includes both an intelligence test and an achievement test. We use the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS-2) and the Woodcock Johnson Achievement Test (WJIV). Children can be tested for giftedness starting in the January before they start elementary school through middle school. Some specialized programs even require it for high school admission.

What Is Required To Be In The Gifted Program?

The state of Florida defines a gifted student as one who has superior intellectual development and is capable of high performance. A minimum IQ of 130 is required.

How Do I Know If My Child Is Gifted?

The best way to know for sure is to get an assessment. Every child is different but some common signs that your child is gifted include a love for learning, creativity, curiosity, a different way of viewing the world, perfectionism, emotional sensitivity, and leadership qualities.

What If My Child Is Really Smart But They Don’t Seem Motivated?

Sometimes when gifted children are not challenged, they become unmotivated. They may refrain from doing tasks that they see as boring and not worth their time. Sometimes a child can be twice exceptional meaning they may have an attentional deficit or learning disability but also be gifted. If you think that may be the case for your child, we can add additional testing to get a fuller picture of what’s going on.

What If My Child Does Not Meet The Criteria For Giftedness?

Many really smart children are not labeled as gifted. Only 1-2 percent of the population is gifted. There is something in Florida called Plan B which refers to giftedness in underrepresented populations. We can talk more about eligibility for Plan B and what is considered to be an underrepresented population.

How Do I Prepare My Child For Gifted Testing?

Most importantly keep it calm. The worst thing to do is put pressure on a gifted child who already may be experiencing a high need to succeed. Send them to testing with a snack and a drink and comfortable cloths, and plan to do it early in the day so they are at their best. Remind them to guess when they don’t know and that this is not like a regular test, so they won’t know everything. You can help prepare your younger child by reviewing sight words including color and number words, helping them to work on simple addition and subtraction, and working on writing skills such as writing their name, numbers and letters, but it is not necessary. There is no way to prepare your older child for testing. Base your decision to test on your personal insights, their grades and class performance, and teacher evaluations

How Do I Schedule A Gifted Assessment And What Is The Cost?

Gifted assessments can be scheduled by calling Kelly at 561-769-9437. The cost is 400 dollars for the testing and follow-up report. Insurance does not pay for gifted testing but if you feel your child is experiencing both giftedness and an attentional, sensory, or learning difficulty, that can and often is paid for by insurance.

How Quickly Will I Get My Results?

Our schedule is tight due to the amount of testing we do each week so schedule early. You will know the results of the assessment the same day and you will receive your report within 48 hours.

Can I Be In The Room With My Child And Where Is It Done?

You know your child better than we do so we leave it up to you. Some children do better when their parents are not in the room, but we can talk about that. The good news is we are available to come right to your home which usually eases even the shyest child’s anxiety.

What Do I Do Once My Child Is Diagnosed As Gifted?

The first thing you will do is to bring the report to the school your child is or will be attending and an EP Plan will be developed. Not all schools have gifted programs so based on your location we can discuss the best choices for gifted programs in your area.
